Comprehensive Eye Exams

A routine eye exam helps to detect ocular and general health issues related to changes in your retina. We recommend booking in for a routine eye test at least every two years, although we may advise some people to see us more regularly depending on the condition of their eyes.

We often get asked what happens during an eye exam. Everyone’s eyes are different, so the eye test you receive may differ from the next person’s. Generally, a routine eye test will include:

  • Discussion of your medical history
  • Digital retinal scan
  • Visual acuity test, using eye charts
  • Dry eye assessment
  • Dilated fundus examination
  • Guidance & advice
  • We may also conduct a visual field test.

Visual Field Testing

If you or our optometrist believe you may have peripheral vision loss, we may conduct a visual field test. This examination is a way of diagnosing glaucoma and blind spots, also known as scotomas, which assists in allowing us to provide treatment.

Blind spots are important to identify as they may be associated with other defects, such as damage to the eye and optic nerve, visual structures in the brain, retina disease and optic neuropathy.

During a visual field test, you’ll look into our visual field testing machine and stare directly ahead. As you see flashes of light, you’ll press a button. While your eyes may become a little dry with frequent blinking, this exam should not hurt. Our optometrist is there to guide you through the entire process and answer any questions you may have.

Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT)

OCT is a non-invasive test used to help detect glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), macular holes, diabetic eye diseases and other retina conditions. It does this by using light waves to take cross-section images of your retina, showing us each of its distinctive layers. Our optometrist is then able to measure the thickness of each layer, giving us an indication of any problems.

Before an OCT exam, we may place dilating drops in your eyes to help widen your pupil for ease of testing. During the exam, you’ll sit in front of the machine, resting your head on a support to limit movement. The machine will then take between 5-10 minutes to scan your eyes. Please note that this test will incur an extra fee, please contact us for more details.
